Rest by Age

How rest time works for each age group

Sleep needs change dramatically across the early years. Here's how rest time is approached for each age group at Oak Tree — always guided by individual need, never by a rigid timetable.

🍼
0 – 2 years Nursery — flexible, frequent rest

Babies and young toddlers need multiple rest periods throughout the day. Their sleep is entirely on demand. We follow each baby's individual schedule rather than imposing a fixed nap time. Your baby's home routine guides how we care for them.

Multiple sleeps per day

Babies need two or more sleep periods throughout the day. We follow each baby's natural rhythm, allowing them to sleep when they show signs of tiredness, not according to a schedule.

Daily Sleep Log

Every sleep, including exact start and end times, is recorded in your child's Daily Register. You’ll see a complete overview of their rest at pick-up and in your daily update.

Your Home Routine Matters

Let us know how your baby sleeps at home, including their settling cues, preferred sleep position, or use of a dummy. We aim to keep your home routine consistent to support better sleep.

Constant Supervision

Our educators regularly check sleeping babies, following strict safe sleep protocols to ensure their safety during every sleep throughout the day.

🧸
2 – 3 Years Toddlers — One Mid-Day Rest

Most toddlers in this age group benefit from a single rest period after lunch. We provide a calm, relaxed rest environment – children who don’t sleep are encouraged to rest quietly, but we never force sleep.

Post-Lunch Rest Period

Rest time happens after lunch for the toddler group – a naturally timed wind-down that aligns with most children's energy cycles. Stretcher beds are set up in a calm, darkened space.

Rest, Not Necessarily Sleep

Children who don't fall asleep are still encouraged to rest quietly – looking at a book, listening to soft music, or simply lying still. Rest itself is restorative, even without sleep.

Rest Times Recorded

hether your child slept, rested quietly, or was unsettled, all of this is recorded in the Daily Register so you have a full picture of their day at pick-up.

We Follow Your Cues

Some toddlers are transitioning away from daytime sleep. Let us know what's happening at home, and we’ll mirror that as closely as possible – consistent sleep signals help children regulate.

🎒
3 – 5 Years Pre-School – Quiet Rest Time

Many pre-schoolers no longer need daytime sleep, but all children benefit from a quiet rest period to recharge for an energetic afternoon. Rest time for older children is calm and gentle, never forced.

Quiet Time Activity

Pre-schoolers who don’t sleep engage in quiet independent activities like looking at books, drawing, or simply resting on their stretcher bed with a soft toy. This restorative downtime is valuable even without sleep.

Calm Atmosphere Created

The room transitions to a calmer mood with lights softened, voices quieter, and soothing music in the background. Even children who don’t sleep benefit from this change in pace mid-afternoon.

No Child Ever Forced to Sleep

We never force a child to sleep. If your pre-schooler no longer naps at home, let us know. We’ll ensure they rest comfortably without disrupting other children who still need sleep.

Please note

Feel free to bring your child’s favourite toy or comfort item if they like to sleep with it. Please ensure it is clearly labelled with your child's name.

Frequently asked questions

The questions parents ask us most often about how rest time works at Oak Tree.

Absolutely not. We never force a child to sleep. Rest time is an opportunity to wind down, relax, and recharge. Children who don't fall asleep are encouraged to rest quietly with a book or soft toy. The environment is calm and supportive, not coercive.

Babies sleep on demand. We follow their individual rhythm rather than a fixed schedule. We will mirror your home routine as closely as possible. All baby sleeps follow SIDS & Kids safe sleeping recommendations. Sleep is physically monitored by our educators, and every sleep is recorded (start time, end time) in the Daily Register.

We follow all safe sleeping recommendations as set down by SIDS & Kids Australia — the national authority on infant and child sleep safety. This includes always placing babies on their back, face uncovered, in a safe firm sleep environment with no loose bedding. Staff are trained in these practices, and all sleeping children are physically checked at regular intervals. All cots meet Australian Standards.

Yes. Every rest period is recorded in the Daily Register in your child's room, available for you to review at pick-up. You'll also receive this information in your daily afternoon email update. If your child had an unusual sleep day, an educator will always mention it at pick-up too.

Please let us know, and we'll adjust how we manage rest time for your child. They'll have a calm, quiet period — reading a book, resting on their stretcher bed — without being required to sleep. We ensure this doesn't disrupt other children who do still need sleep. Your input is invaluable here.

Always. We warmly encourage it. Chat with your child's room leader at drop-off or pick-up any day, or call us during the day. The more we know about your child's sleep routine and preferences at home, the better we can care for them during rest time here.
